03/13/2026, Brussels – The recent developments in the international situation in the Middle‑East are being closely monitored by the competent Belgian authorities.
As with any major geopolitical crisis, CUTA conducts continuous analyses of the potential implications for domestic security, in the areas of terrorism and extremism, in close cooperation with its partner services.
In the current context marked by military operations in the Middle East, which have led to rapid regionalization of the conflict and increased mobilization of networks affiliated with Iran, particular attention is paid to threats that could affect Belgium and Belgian interests abroad. Iran has already demonstrated in the past its capacity to carry out —directly or via proxies— operations in Europe against Israeli, Jewish, American interests or against its opposition in exile.
In Belgium, several dynamics call for heightened vigilance:
- the possibility of interference, surveillance or intimidation activities targeting Iranian opponents present on the Belgian territory;
- an elevated risk of tensions and polarization within the concerned diasporas, as well as within radical target audiences that may be influenced by propaganda related to the conflict;
- the historical capacity of Iran and Hezbollah to use networks to carry out operations abroad, or the action of an isolated actor influenced by polarizing narratives linked to the conflict;
These analyses allow the competent services to adjust security measures, if necessary.
In this context, the level of general threat in Belgium remains at level 3 (serious threat), with heightened vigilance for Israeli and Jewish, American and Iranian interests.
In an international context marked by increased tensions, CUTA stresses the importance of general vigilance and of critically assessing information circulating online, particularly when such information may fuel polarization, disinformation or hateful messages.
